CAN WE CONVERT SALT WATER TO FRESH WATER BY USING ONLY SMALL DEVICES?

Believe it or not, the answer is yes. And not only yes—we’ve been doing it for decades, long before “climate resilience” became a buzzword. Today, small portable desalination devices can turn seawater into fresh drinking water using nothing more than solar power, manual pumps, or small-scale reverse osmosis systems. They are already used by humanitarian groups, remote communities, and fishermen who need reliable drinking water on the go.

These devices could be lifesavers during emergencies, but here’s the real point—many barangays in the Philippines may need them every single day.

Water scarcity is no longer a distant threat. Even coastal communities surrounded by water are running short—not because they lack seawater, but because their freshwater sources are getting saline. This quiet crisis is called salinization, and it is happening all over the country: in Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Cavite, Cebu, Negros, and parts of Mindanao. Wells that used to provide drinking water now taste salty. Aquifers are being infiltrated by seawater. And as sea levels rise, this problem will only spread.

Without fresh water, communities cannot cook, clean, irrigate, or drink. No economy, no household, no farm can run without it. Water is not just a convenience—it is survival.

That brings us back to the question: can small devices really help?

Absolutely. Some compact desalination technologies now available include:

QuenchSea – Hand-pump powered, can produce around 3 liters per hour, ideal for emergencies or daily use.
Rainman Watermaker – Portable reverse osmosis system producing 50–140 liters per hour, used by remote islands and sailors.
MIT’s solar desalination prototype – Uses sunlight alone, with no filters, no high-pressure pumps, pointing toward future ultra-low-cost solutions.

These devices rely on technologies such as reverse osmosis, solar distillation, electrodialysis, and atmospheric water harvesting. The key is that they don’t require large power plants or massive infrastructure.

And this brings me to one of the most remarkable innovators in this field—a woman the world almost forgot.

Her name was Mária Telkes, a Hungarian-American scientist known during her time as “The Sun Queen.” During World War II, stranded pilots and shipwrecked sailors in the Pacific survived because of a small solar still she invented. This device, which fit inside a life raft, turned seawater into drinkable water using only sunlight. No electricity, no moving parts, no fuel—just evaporation and condensation. Her solar still saved countless lives, and it remained standard equipment for the U.S. Navy and Air Force into the 1960s.

Telkes did not stop there. In 1948, she co-created the Dover Sun House, the world’s first home heated entirely by solar energy. She held over 20 patents and pioneered technologies still used in today’s solar and thermal systems.

Her legacy is simple but profound: the sun can save lives.

So why can’t we apply the same thinking today?

If salinization continues—and it will—the government must know where it is happening, how fast, and what communities are at risk. That should be a priority national mapping program, ideally led by DOST, in coordination with DENR, LGUs, and water districts. Once the hotspots are identified, small desalination devices could be deployed in barangays, evacuation centers, fisherfolk communities, eco-villages, disaster shelters, and off-grid islands.

Of course, portable devices are not the ultimate solution. But they are a practical, immediate, scalable intervention that can prevent suffering while long-term water management systems are built.

The question is not whether we can convert salt water to fresh water with small devices.

We already can.

The real question is: when will we begin using them where they are needed most?
